Garlic is the edible bulb of a plant related to onions, shallots, and leeks. It consists of several cloves, each of which are encased in their individual wrapper, and the bulb itself has several layers of thin, wrappers that protect the cloves. Garlic has an earthy, pungent, and spicy taste when raw but takes on a nutty flavor when cooked. It is an excellent source of vitamin B6, C, and manganese while having lower amounts of calcium and phosphorus. Garlic does well as the main flavor in dressings, marinades, and sauces, pairing well with acidic fruits, vegetables, or meats like beef, poultry, and seafood. Garlic will last anywhere from one to four months, depending on the variety, when stored in a cool and dry place.
