
Ingredients
For the Dish:
- 12 oz uncooked penne pasta (regular or whole wheat)
- 3 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 cup heavy cream or whole milk (for richness)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 16 oz (about 20–24 small) frozen or homemade cooked meatballs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish (optional)
🧑🍳 Instructions
1. Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole dish.
2. Mix the Sauce Base:
In a large bowl, whisk together:
- Marinara sauce
- Water
- Cream (or milk)
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic powder
- Crushed red pepper
Add a pinch of salt and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
3. Assemble the Casserole:
In the prepared baking dish:
- Pour in the uncooked penne.
- Add meatballs evenly throughout.
- Pour the sauce mixture over the pasta and meatballs. Mix lightly to make sure pasta is coated.
- Cover tightly with foil.
4. Bake Covered:
Bake, covered with foil, for 40 minutes.
5. Add Cheese and Finish Baking:
Remove foil, stir gently (the pasta should be almost tender), top with mozzarella and Parmesan.
Bake uncovered for an additional 10–15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
6. Rest and Serve:
Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped basil or parsley if desired.
