D’Anjou pears are medium to large sized with a rounded large bottom half that tapers to a rounded top and a bright green skin. The flesh is moist, ivory colored with a and is fine-grained texture, surrounding a core containing small, black seeds. D’Anjou pears are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and iron. These pears work well in both raw and cooked applications such as baking or grilling. They make excellent preserves or syrups and can even be used to in grilled cheese sandwiches or as a pizza topping. When mature but not quite fully ripe, D’Anjou pears are crunchy, tart, and slightly gritty, but as they fully ripen, they develop a juicy, buttery texture with a sweet flavor. They can hold for up to three weeks when stored in the refrigerator and a little over one year when stored in the freezer.
